Marco Polo was a great traveler. He traveled for 24 years. He started the big journey with his father and uncle when he was only 17 years old. He traveled throughout China, India and Southeast Asia as emissary for Mongol Emperor Kublia Khan.

He was 41 years old when he came back from the journey.

It wasn’t easy to travel at that time. Marco Polo and his people traveled first by sea t hen by land. Along the way they were attacked by pirates and bandits. Some of them got terribly sick and died during the trip. It required from them a lot of courage and bravery to travel 15,000 miles.

In 1275 the Polo’s were greeted by Kublai Khan. Marco Polo knew 4 languages so the Khan sent him on important government missions for 17 years.

For these years Marco Polo visited many interesting and new to him places throughout the Mongol Empire.

Marco Polo learned so many great things that the people in Asia had at that time. He found out in Asia people used coal, printing and paper money. He was very impressed with the mail system of the Empire.

Marco Polo returned home with many riches. He got a nickname “Marco Millions” because he came back home with lots of riches and millions of stories to tell. Many people didn’t believe his stories.

His great achievement was that he dictated the story to a writer while he was in a jail. The book about his explore was called “ A Description of the World”.

Polo’s book was copied by hand. His book inspired many great travelers.

Christopher Columbus read his book and explored America.

Morelle Kohler first came to Montana in 1945 by train. Her family moved here to work. Her dad was a blacksmith and her brother was mining. When she was little, she skated on the pond in winter. Her dad made skis for her. The skis were not fancy. Morelle’s favorite toy was the doll she once got for Christmas. She didn’t have any other toys. Morelle and her friends rode workhorses for fun.

They made their own fun. At that time they didn’t have TV or movies just radio. Only when she was in high school, she first time watched a silent movie. In those days kids played softballs. There were lots of lakes, where kids learnt how to swim.

Her school had a one-room school house, where there was one teacher for all 1st through 8th grades and all subjects but no kindergartens. The whole school had thirty students and they all had homework to do. Kids walked to
school. At recess Morelle and her friends played balls or snowballs. Boys were disciplined by slapping on their hands with a ruler. Sometimes girls had to stand facing the blackboard.

People raised basically all their food. They had their own cattle, cows, chicken, large gardens, fruit trees and berry bushes. They had much more simple food than it is now. You buy all the food today but those days they
cooked on a wood stove. Morelle’s dad hunted deer. Her chores were to bring wood for the stove, bring cows from the pasture , bring water from the pump and do the dishes. There was no running water.

When Morelle was in the 7th grade, one day it was very cold. The snow was deep and the storm was bad. Kids didn’t go to school for a week because of the storm. Two friends of Morelle’s stayed with her family for a week. Because
they couldn’t even go out.

One day Morelle was riding a horse with her friend on a dusty road. No saddles just a bridle. The horse stumbled the girls slid right over the horse’s head and right through the dust. Now Morelle thinks it was funny. She had a
happy childhood.

The End

February 10, 2005
By Onyuka Chinbat

I have an adventure I want to tell you! It was a perfect Monday morning. My mom said: “ Olina, your father and I decided to move to Washington DC.” But didn’t want to move. I wanted to stay here in Montana. A month later we were ready to move. So we got on the train. When all of us got into our PJ’s and went to sleep. I couldn’t sleep.

I just …….couldn’t sleep. In the middle of the night, I was looking out of the window because there was nothing to do for me but look out the window. I didn’t want to wake everyone up. Then I saw something I couldn’t believe! It was a blend of colors. I opened the window to check it out. I stuck my hand out to feel it and the next thing I know I was in a place I had not been before.

I was in an unknown jungle. This is where all the adventure started. The jungle was amazingly colorful that made you want to go deeper and deeper. Suddenly, I thought of my parents. But I didn’t know how to go back. I cried for help but no one was there. Then there was something was sparkly on a big leaf. I was curious to know what was going on. So I went to the big leaf. The sparkly thing turned out to be a fairy but maybe a little bigger like an angel. She introduced herself to me.

Her name was Arlina. “Do you believe in magic?” , Arlina asked. “Well….. well, yes. “, I said. “ If you do, “ said Arlina “ it will be easier for you to travel back.” So she gave me a dog who will guide me to get out of the jungle. Arlina
disappeared before I even got a chance to ask her how to travel back.I named the dog Scuffy and he became my best friend. On the way Scuffy and I found a lost monkey. We decided to help him. But we didn’t know how to speak the monkey language. He joined us till he finds his mom and dad. I missed MY mom and dad a lot. Then all of the sudden, the ground started moving! It was an earthquake! We ran, hoping we would find a safe place. Fortunately, the earthquake stopped and no one was hurt!

There were two big trees that had fallen down. It was a perfect place to build a shelter. Scuffy and I worked really hard to build the shelter. We slept very cozy all night. The next day we went out to find some food and water. Not far from our shelter there was a lake with lots of fish. The water of the lake was crystal clear. While were drinking water, the monkey came back with his mom and dad. Scuffy and I were so happy to see them. We played together for a while.

Then we heard a big scream!
Scuffy and I went over there to see what was going on. It was a little boy chased by a tiger! I grabbed him so quickly even the tiger didn’t notice. Scuffy barked at the tiger. The tiger got scared and ran away.

The boy, Scuffy and I went back to our shelter. We all introduced ourselves. The boy’s name was Fred. He was just a little younger than me. “Fred, tell us how you got here?”, I said. “I was reading The Magic House“, said Fred, “ and the pictures came alive. I don’t know how I got here” he continued. “Magic really happens then”, Fred said. I told him my story too. We both so badly wanted to go back home. Fred was scared of darkness. At night Fred was sleep walking and got lost.

I woke up in the middle of the night because of the night mare. Scuffy was snoring very loudly. I wondered if Fred heard Scuffy snoring too. Then I heard someone talking. It sounded like Fred sleep talking. I got out of the shelter and went to look for him. I would’ve been very dark if there wasn’t a full moon. By the light of the moon, I saw Fred sleep talking and sleep walking. “Mom… mommy, where are you?” , Fred cried sleep talking. I gently woke him up. I
have to tell you he was surprised when he woke up.

On the way to our shelter, the tiger came back! This time it was hard because Scuffy wasn’t there to bark and scare the tiger away. Fred and I ran away from the scary looking tiger. The tiger was so fast. He almost caught up with us. If we couldn’t find a way to get rid of it in ten seconds we would’ve been a dead meat! Fred had a very smart idea. “Can you swim?”, Fred asked. “Yes”, I said. “Let’s jump in the lake, because tigers don’t like to get wet”, Fred said. So we jumped in the lake and swam to the middle. By the time we got there the tiger was gone. “ Well… I think, he’s gone”, I said. “ Olina, do you think we would ever go back to our parents”, Fred asked. “ I don’t know. I hope” , I said. I was very worried because I didn’t know how to go back. We went back to our shelter.

The next morning I woke up and realized that Fred was gone. I had no idea where he was. Scuffy was just outside the shelter. I searched for Fred everywhere. It was either I couldn’t find him or the jungle was just too big. I
came to the lake expecting to see Fred there. I was right. Fred was there to catch fish to make meal for us. I was so happy to see him again. I had felt that I lost my friend. I understood more and more that people should be loyal to each
other and respect the friendship.

Fred cooked very delicious meal. All of us enjoyed being together again and understood more and more how we needed each other. Suddenly, Fred screamed “TIGER!!!” This time it was too late to jump into the water because he was very close to us. Amazingly, the tiger didn’t attach us.

He seemed he wanted to be friends with us. We got closer to him. The tiger lied down and obviously wanted to take us for a ride. So we did. Soon we were flying. The blend of colors once again flushed in front of us. I just blinked and I
was on the train with Scuffy. I looked around and everything was exactly same before the magic happened. We thought the tiger was trying to eat us. Nobody knew he would be the one to bring us back. I was so thankful to the tiger, Fred
and Scuffy. I was lucky to have true friends like them.

THE END
